ANDROID OPERATING SYSTEM AT RISK-POLYTECHMATE

Android phones vulnerable to remote data wipes-polytechmate

WASHINGTON: Cellphones using Google's Android operating system are at risk of being disabled or wiped clean of their data, including contacts, music and photos, because of a security flaw that was discovered several months ago but went unnoticed until now.
Opening a link to a website or a mobile application embedded with malicious code can trigger an attack capable of destroying the memory card in Android-equipped handsets made by Samsung, HTC, Motorola and Sony Ericsson, rendering the devices useless, computer security researcher Ravi Borgaonkar wrote in a blog post Friday. Another code that can erase a user's data by performing a factory reset of the device appears to target only the newly released and top selling Galaxy S III and other Samsung phones, he wrote.
Borgaonkar informed Google of the vulnerability in June, he said. A fix was issued quickly, he said, but it wasn't publicized, leaving smartphone owners largely unaware that the problem existed and how they could fix it.
Google declined to comment. Android debuted in 2008 and now dominates the smartphone market. Nearly 198 million smartphones using Android were sold in the first six months of 2012, according to the research firm IDC. About 243 million Android-equipped phones were sold in 2011, IDC said.
Versions of Android that are vulnerable include Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean, according to Borgaonkar. He said the Honeycomb version of Android, designed for tablets, needs to be tested to determine if it is at risk as well.
Samsung, which makes most of the Android phones, said only early production models of the Galaxy S III were affected and a software update has been issued for that model. The company said it is conducting an internal review to determine if other devices are affected and what, if any, action is needed. Samsung said it is advising customers to check for software updates through the "Settings: About device: Software update'' menu available on Samsung phones.
Borgaonkar, a researcher at Germany's Technical University Berlin, said the bug works by taking advantage of functions in phones that allow them to dial a telephone number directly from a web browser. That convenience comes with risk, however. A hacker, or anyone with ill intent, can create a website or an app with codes that instruct the phones linking to those numbers to execute commands automatically, such as a full factory reset.
The phone's memory card, known as a subscriber identity module, or SIM, can be destroyed remotely in the same way, Borgaonkar said. "Vulnerability in Android can be exploited to kill the SIM card permanently by clicking a single click,'' he wrote. "After the successful attack, the end user has to go to the mobile network operator and buy a new SIM card.''
While Borgaonkar has drawn attention to the problem, it's unclear how useful the vulnerability would be to cybercriminals who are primarily interested in profits or gaining a competitive advantage, said Jimmy Shah, a mobile security researcher at McAfee. "There's no benefit to the attacker if they can't make money off it or they can't steal your data,'' Shah said. "It's really not that useful.''
But the technique could cause huge headaches if it were harnessed to issue outbound phone calls, said Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at F-Secure, a digital security company inHelsinki, Finland. "If that would be doable, we would quickly see real world attacks causing phones to automatically dial out to premium-rate numbers,'' he said.

NEX PHONE CONCEPT

Nex Phone concept: an Ubuntu-based, Android 'brain in your pocket'

Canonical generated significant excitement earlier this year when it announced its Ubuntu for Android plans, which included dockable smartphones that can launch the full Ubuntu Linux desktop.
No specific names were mentioned at the time regarding manufacturer partners, but recently a new concept project appeared that seeks to bring that vision to life
Canonical generated significant excitement earlier this year when it announced its Ubuntu for Android plans, which included dockable smartphones that can launch the full Ubuntu Linux desktop.
No specific names were mentioned at the time regarding manufacturer partners, but recently a new concept project appeared that seeks to bring that vision to life

PC, tablet, and laptop options
The vision is this: When connected to a monitor and a keyboard using a dedicated docking station, the NexPhone would provide a full desktop PC solution using Ubuntu for Android, complete with a full range of desktop applications including office, Web browsing, email, media, and messaging.
Docked to the NexTablet, meanwhile, the device, if built, will offer a larger touch screen for apps, e-books, magazines, and Web browsing. When docked, the tablet uses the phone service for Internet access, so only one data plan is required for both devices.
Then, too, there's the NexLaptop, which offers a full PC experience with a keyboard and track pad when the NexPhone is docked.
Last but not least, the wide-screen NexMonitor offers yet another office PC option complete with keyboard, number pad, and multitouch track pad.
The video below explains the concept in more detail.

MTS PLAYING WITH SMART PHONES

Operator watch: MTS

The CDMA operator is doing everything to lure users-from launching a slew of Android handsets to giving attractive voice and data plans. Read on to know more.

MTS is the only CDMA player in India that has no GSM network. The other two CDMA players Tata Docomo and Reliance Communications have GSM networks too. MTS has more than 16 million subscribers, at least 10 per cent of which were using dongles (data cards) in the month of June 2012. The operator wants to grow further and is now not only bringing attractive plans for customers, but has also launched around 12 MTS branded CDMA handsets to lure new users.

Already, in the last two months MTS has launched as many as five smartphones in India. Apart from that it also showcased three new dual SIM Android phones this week, which can use both CDMA and GSM networks. The aim of this move is to lure GSM mobile users who are reluctant to migrate to CDMA.

top features of android jelly bean

Top five new features in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
New OS version enables voice dictation feature no longer needs network connection to

Google previewed the new version Android 4.1 is nicknamed Jelly Bean,  Wednesday at a conference in       San Francisco for computer programmers.
The new OS facilitates faster ways to search content on the Internet, share photos between two phones   and more has been promised as a part of the next version of Google's Android operating system for mobile devices.
Here are the highlights of the new android 4.1 Jelly Bean:
            1. Google Now
One of the new features in Android will be Google Now, which is supposed to get you the right information at the right time automatically, if you activate the feature. If you say "traffic," for example, it will look at your usual commute to work and show you alternative routes if there's a lot of traffic. It will tell you the scores of your favorite sports teams automatically, and it will keep you up to date on the status of your flights if you're traveling.
Google said the Google Now feature will get smarter as you use it more. The feature represents Google's response to Siri, the popular virtual assistant on Apple's iPhone.
          2. Offline voice typing
Android has long included voice dictation feature but with Jelly Bean, Google has taken it even further and it no longer needs network connection to work. Yes, that means offline voice typing. The company's engineers have shrunk the voice recognition engine significantly to make it fit in a phone, unlike earlier when the whole processing used to take place of Google servers.
Offline voice typing will be initially available in English (US),

Apple unlikely to use our technology in new iPhones: Audience

Apple unlikely to use our technology in new iPhones: Audience
Audience Inc, which makes chips used in Apple Inc's iPhones, said its top customer is unlikely to use its technology for the latest iPhone, sending Audience shares down 58 percent in after-hours trading.
Audience's chips improve the voice quality in mobile devices by filtering out background noise, and the company supplies these to Apple's contract manufacturers like Foxconn International Holdings Ltd and Protek Ltd.
The Mountain View, California-based company also sells processors and licenses its processor intellectual property to Apple and some of its units.
However, the company said in a statement that it now believes Apple is unlikely to use its processor technology in the iPhone 5, which is expected to be launched next week. Audience has been selling to Apple since 2008.
An Audience executive was not immediately available for further comment.
For Audience, Apple's licensing of the filtering technology accounted for 37 percent of total revenue for both the three and six months ended June 30.
The company, which also counts Samsung Electronics Co Ltd among its top customers, said in a regulatory filing in May that a reduction in orders from one or more of its customers could significantly harm its business, financial condition and cash flows.
Loss of Apple contract, however, will not impact Audience's third-quarter results but would affect it a quarter after Apple starts selling its next-generation mobile phones, the company said in a statement.
Audience raised its third-quarter revenue outlook to between $35 million and $38 million from its prior forecast of between $33 million and $36 million. It expects an adjusted profit of 14 cents to 18 cents per share.
Analysts on average were expecting a profit of 11 cents per share on revenue of $34.7 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
The company competes with Maxim Integrated Products Inc, ON Semiconductor Corp, Qualcomm Inc, Texas Instruments Inc, Wolfson Microelectronics Plc and Yamaha Corp.
Shares of the company, which went public in May, fell to $7.99 in trading after the regular market close. The stock closed at $18.86 on the Nasdaq on Thursday.
Audience, which had a market value of about $380 million at close of regular trading on Thursday, lost $200 million in value in extended trade.
