MOBILES NOT GONNA BE SAME ALL TIME...-POLYTECHMATE

Lens to make mobiles as thin as credit cards

Scientists are developing a new ultra-thin lens which could lead to smart phones as thin as a credit card.
The new lens is flat, distortion-free and so small that more than 1,500 would fit across the width of a human hair - capable in the future of replacing lenses in applications ranging from cell phones to cameras to fiber-optic communication systems.
In a study published in journal Nano Letters, Federico Capasso and colleagues explained that the lenses used to focus light in eyeglasses, microscopes and other products use the same basic technology dating to the late 1200s, when spectacle lenses were introduced in Europe.
Existing lenses are not thin or flat enough to remove distortions, such as spherical aberration, astigmatism and coma, which prevent the creation of a sharp image. Correction of those distortions requires complex solutions, such as multiple lenses that increase weight and take up space. To overcome these challenges, the scientists sought to develop a new super thin, flat lens.
Although the new lens is ultra-thin, it has a resolving power that actually approaches the theoretical limits set by the laws of optics.
The lens surface is patterned with tiny metallic stripes which bend light differently as one moves away from the centre, causing the beam to sharply focus without distorting the images.
The current version of the lens works at a specific design wavelength, but the scientists say it can be redesigned for use with broad-band light.

Facebook’s “Promote Your Post” Feature – Boom or Bust..?

Facebook’s “Promote Your Post” Feature – Boom or Bust?

On the heels of Facebook’s IPO bust, they launched a feature that now allows you topromote your Facebook posts so that more of your fans will see it.  (Your page must have at least 400 Likes.)
All promoted posts will show up as a “Sponsored Listing” in your fan’s feeds.
Statistics have already proven that Facebook users generally ignore ads, and GM recently pulled their campaign due to poor performance.
Granted, this is a little different than a regular ad because the post will be showed to people who already “Like” your page, but anytime the word “Sponsored” is used, it has a promotional feel to it.
So I don’t know about you, but this announcement didn’t make me do any happy dances. ;)

Why Use It?

If you have a Facebook page, you’ve probably already noticed a limited percentage of your fans actually see your posts.  In fact, Facebook admitted that brand page content is only viewed by 16% of your fans on average.
This is due to many reasons – users not logged in when you post, they get lost in the shuffle of other posts and pages people “Like”, etc.
And of course, the skeptic in me can’t help but wonder if they are now ensuring your posts are shown to a limited number of people to encourage more ad spend.
Let’s face it.  At the end of the day, it’s about making money – anything to help their ailing stock, right?
According to FB, not only will this feature ensure more post visibility by giving it a sponsored label, but when your fans interact with the promoted post, it will be shown to their friends as well.

Is it Worth It?

Post promotion has its place, but I wouldn’t just haphazardly use it without a solid plan.
Say you’re having a huge promotion or contest for UK residents only.   Since you can target the post, you may consider testing it out for something like this because you can reach more relevant people.
You also have to consider the fundamentals of marketing.  More views is not necessarily better if you struggle with fan interaction and engagement to begin with.  Just like pay-per-click marketing or any kind of paid advertising, your content needs to convert for the campaign to be successful.
So if your paid Facebook post gives you 50% more views, but your engagement (likes, comments or whatever you’re measuring) shows minimal results, technically that campaign was a failure.
So I wouldn’t throw any dollars into any advertising until you have a real plan in mind and understand that the basic rules of marketing and engagement still apply.
So tell me.  Would you ever pay to promote your posts on Facebook?  Have you tried it yet?  What are your thoughts about this in general?  I’d love to hear from those who’ve tried it.

iPhone sales lift Apple past $700 is it going to create an another history..?

iPhone sales lift Apple past $700

Apple Inc. surpassed $700 in morning trading Tuesday as record first-day orders for the latest iPhone fueled optimism that the company will keep generating the revenue growth that transformed it from a niche computer manufacturer into the world’s most valuable business.
Shares climbed as high as $702.80 at 7:10 a.m. after reaching a record $699.78 at the New York close Monday. By mid-afternoon, Apple shares had fallen back to $699.01.
The iPhone 5, which features a bigger screen, faster chip and a lighter body, sold 2 million units in first-day orders, more than double a record set by the previous model, Apple said. Since its 2007 debut, the device has become Apple’s top-selling product, accounting for about two-thirds of profit. Signs of robust demand reinforced expectations that Apple will withstand accelerating competition from Samsung Electronics Co. and Google Inc. in the $219.1 billion smartphone market.
“It leaves me in awe,” said Rex Ishibashi, chief executive officer of Callaway Digital Arts Inc., which develops games for the iPhone. “It’s reflective of how important these devices and these digital technologies have become in our lives.”
Apple’s surge gathered steam Sept. 14, after it began taking orders for iPhone 5. Apple’s website said new orders wouldn’t ship until Sept. 28, a week after the handset is due in stores, an indication that supply may be running thin.
“The initial batch is sold out,” Shaw Wu, an analyst at Sterne Agee & Leach Inc., said in an interview. He raised his sales estimate for the quarter ending in September to 26 million units, from 23 million. “We think that could turn out to be conservative.”
Exxon, Microsoft
Apple surpassed Exxon Mobil Corp. to become the biggest company in the world by market capitalization last year after overtaking Microsoft Corp. as the most valuable technology provider in 2010. Before his death in October, co-founder Steve Jobs mastered a strategy of pushing Apple beyond its core business of selling computers into new markets, including digital music and mobile phones. Each new family of products helped the company boost revenue while inducing investors to snap up more shares.
Revenue increased to $35 billion in the June quarter from $1.73 billion in the last quarter before Jobs returned to Apple in 1997. Apple’s shares crossed the $600 threshold in July, after passing $500 in February and $400 last year.
IPhone sales last quarter alone reached $16.2 billion, 33 percent higher than Google Inc.’s total and almost as much as Microsoft Corp.’s $18.1 billion in revenue.
58 Million
As many as 58 million units of the iPhone 5 may sell by the end of the year, according the average estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. That could generate as much as $36.2 billion in sales for Apple.
Apple has grown adept at keeping existing customers and drawing new ones through incremental improvements to the hardware and software of its products while also cultivating a developer community that cranks out thousands of applications for use on the company’s phones and computers, said Dan Morris, chief investment officer at Morris Capital Advisors, whose largest holding is Apple.
The company’s shares are also getting a boost from a legal victory in August, when a jury said Samsung copied the iPhone. The outcome of the California trial may result in a ban on certain Samsung phones in the U.S., and it ratchets up pressure on Apple competitors to make their products less like the iPhone and iPad.
TV Challenges
Gains in coming months will hinge on the success of future products, such as a smaller version of the iPad tablet, which according to people with knowledge of the matter will be released in October. Apple is also trying to make headway with products that let users view TV shows and movies on Apple devices. Yet the company has struggled to come to terms with communications providers over how products will be crafted, and media companies have been reluctant to cede control over content and customer relationships.
“That may be a tough market for them,” Morris said.

For now, the share rally is poised to continue, according to analysts who, on average, are predicting that Apple will rise to about $775 in the coming 12 months, data compiled by Bloomberg show.
